International Research Software Funders Workshop

September 18–20, 2023, in Montréal, Canada, and virtual

The Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance) and the Research Software Alliance (ReSA) hosted a two-day international workshop in Montréal on September 19 & 20 and a pre-workshop on September 18.

The workshop theme was “Investing in People: Anticipating the Future of Research Software”. The event aimed to set the future agenda for government, philanthropic, and industry funders to support sustainable research software and communities. As the importance of research software – and the people who develop and maintain it – has become increasingly apparent, so has the need to sustain it. Funders can play a crucial role by ensuring structural support. During the workshop, participants worked together to explore how they can support the advancement of research software.

The workshop built on the first International Funders Workshop: The Future of Research Software in late 2022, involving 40+ funding organisations from across the globe. The 2022 workshop resulted in the Amsterdam Declaration on Funding Research Software Sustainability (ADORE.software).

Organisers and Steering Committee

ReSA advances the research software ecosystem by collaborating with decision makers and key influencers. ReSA’s vision is that research software and those who develop and maintain it are recognised and valued as fundamental and vital to research worldwide.

The Alliance serves Canadian researchers, with the objective of advancing Canada’s position as a leader in the knowledge economy on the international stage. By integrating, championing, and funding the infrastructure and activities required for advanced research computing (ARC), research data management (RDM), and research software (RS), the Alliance provides the platform for the research community to access tools and services faster than ever before.
